France Burgundy/Beaujolais, Beaujolais, France
Jean Marc Burgaud Beaujolais-Villages "Les Vignes du Thulon" 2010 We fear that there may be a stigma attached to Beaujolais. It seems that Beaujolais Noveau - the jammy, candied, quickly assembled "wine" that arrives every third Thursday in November has come to represent the entire category for some folks. While we enjoy the seasonal ceremony of Nouveau we can assure you that true Beaujolais bears little resemblance to it. This dry, pure and well -structured red from Jean-Marc Burgaud should set the record straight. An honest and natural expression of the Gamay grape, the "Les Vignes de Thulon" boasts loads of freshly crushed black cherry and black raspberry fruits that never get too jammy due to the firm and friendly handshake of tannin that surrounds it. This may sound strange, but this wine reminds me in structure of a red equivalent of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Loads of fruit and palate weight but also very dry, zippy and refreshing. Hints of earth and black currant preserves echo on the cleansing close. Yes, this wine can take a slight chill and sit contentedly next to you on a picnic blanket; but it also can accompany some substantial summer meals. Real Beaujolais - it deserves your attention! Pairings: Summer Beet Salad; Lamb Kabobs
